DWAYNE HANSON
Dwayne Hanson is an American artist and sculptor from Minnesota, America.
He is well known for his realistic sculptures of people, he cast in various materials such as polyester resin, fibreglass, bond or and bronze. Along with hyper- realism his work is often associated with the pop art movement.
His sculptures are cast from actual people the are made of fibreglass and painted to make the skin look realistic with vains and blemishes He paints in layers just like the process and reborning.
A lot of Hanson’s earlier sculptures were destroyed by him, this is because he prefers to be known for his more mature style, this is also similar was reborn on they would much rather you see their most recent work, because each doll is better than your last and not as good as your next.
I like his sculpture “tourists”its two figures man and a woman were quite overweight and the man has a patterned top ensure and the The camera around his neck, the also has a camera around her neck with a stripey T-shirt and carrying a couple of bags. They look like proper tourists they have that real touristy look about them, even their position and posture the way the are looking out just everything about them screams tourist.
The disused fibreglass and mixed media with accessories these are life-size doctors and could be mistaken for actual people. I like the idea that and from this project I want to begin sculpting my own doll kits, but I want to go with this project first our make the mini me “Katie”doll, where I want to continue making the reborn dolls but ultimately I want to move on to sculpting my own clay dolls to be poured in the silicone.
With reborn in you are trying to create that realistic person, you want that shock factor that could actually be a person you could mistake them for a person for a minute and at the same with the kind of work that Duanne Hanson does.
He actually has a sculpture of a woman with a child in a stroller, the child in a stroller is actually quite well made and does look quite realistic although from my point of view the head does look a little bit too big for the body, that might just be the angle of the photos I am looking at or little girl might just have a chubby head I don’t know.
I like to look more into the process in which he sculpts these sculptures, but I have to put them off in our them focusing on the project at hand.
Although these sculptures cover the art form hyper- realism, which is what the reborn dolls fall into they don’t really connect to the kind of context I want my sculpture to be in.
I need to look at sculptures that address the inner child, even if they are not hyperrealistic as the mini me doll “Katie” is only one aspect of the installation that I want to create.
